Memorize and Reflect

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Matthew 6:21)

Prayer Direction

Thank God for the things you have that are more than the basics of life. Acknowledge God’s amazing provision. Ask God to grow your heart to the point where sharing is natural and a deep desire. Thank God for people in your life who have been a model and great example of a generous heart and lifestyle.

“Live It!” Challenge

Heart Check - Take time in the coming week to go over your personal finances from the past thirty days. Look through your checkbook or debit card records. Where have you spent your money? What have you invested in? Answer this question: If the only thing someone knew about you was how you spent your money this past month, where would they say your heart lies? What would they say is your treasure?

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about a few of the things you have that are extras, nonessentials, and blessings from God. How can you express thanks to God for these things?

  2. Read: Matthew 6:2, Hebrews 13:15-16, and 1 John 3:16-18 What do these passages teach about God’s expectation of all of His children who are following Him with obedient hearts? In light of these passages, how do you think God would feel about a follower of His who does not share with generosity?

  3. Read: Matthew 6:2 Why were the people of God in such a bad place? What was God asking of these people to make things right in their relationship with Him? How do you feel when you read this?

  4. When God says that He will open the floodgates of heaven and pour out an overflowing blessing, what are some of the forms these blessings might take? Tell about a specific and surprising way God blessed you when you were faithful to share what you had.

  5. Read: 1 Timothy 6:18-19 and 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 What does it mean to say that a person is storing up or saving treasure in heaven? Why does giving to needs in this world impact eternity?

  6. Read: Proverbs 11:24-25 How have you seen the truth of this passage lived out in the life of a real person (both sides of the equation)?

  7. What is one way you are tempted to protect and withhold what you have? What helps you share and give with greater passion?

  8. Read: Luke 21:1-4 Respond to this statement: Generosity is not a matter of how much you have. If generosity is not about the “how much,” what is it about?

  9. How can your group members inspire each other to grow in your passion to share what you have with greater joy and frequency?
