Memorize and Reflect

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. (Proverbs 1:7)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you hear His wisdom and to prepare your heart and life to be shaped by His wisdom and not your own. Think of specific relationships you have that need some strengthening and fortification. Ask God to use the coming weeks studying Proverbs to do whatever he wants in these relationships.

“Live It!” Challenge

Pick One: Take time to prayerfully reflect on your relationships. Identify one that really needs a fresh start, a new outlook, or maybe a full overhaul. As you read through Proverbs three times in the coming weeks, take note of what wisdom God reveals that will help this relationship (if you will follow the teachings of Proverbs).

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about a person in your life who has been a model of living in true heavenly wisdom. This person knows Jesus and has lived as an example of being guided by the wisdom of God in their daily life.

  2. Read: Proverbs 1:1-7. Why do young people and those who are simple in their thinking need the wisdom God offers in Proverbs and all of the Bible? How will their life be better if they grow in God’s wisdom and follow what He teaches?

  3. Why do people who are wise and discerning still need to grow in wisdom and dig into God’s Word? How does wisdom actually lead to greater wisdom?

  4. Read: Proverbs 1:7. What do you think it means to live with a deep and authentic fear of the Lord? How can fear of the Lord actually make your life better and your relationships healthier?

  5. Read: Proverbs 1:8-19. What is the value of listening to those who are wise and who share God’s wisdom with you? Who shares wisdom with you and to whom do you impart wisdom? Why are these relationships important?

  6. Why is it dangerous to hang out with people who are foolish and who invite you to partake in their folly? What are the consequences that seem to always come when we walk too closely with those who are walking on the path of folly?

  7. Read: Proverbs 1:20-33. What are some of the ways that wisdom cries out for our attention and seeks to pull us back to the will of God?

  8. This passage gives a harsh picture of the consequences that we will face when we ignore the invitation of wisdom. Why do you think it is so blunt?

  9. How have you seen the consequences of a person (you or someone else) ignoring wisdom and walking too close to foolishness?

  10. What can we do to embrace wisdom more firmly and turn from folly more quickly? What ideas can you share with your group?
