Ask God to give you wisdom and insight to know when a person is sincerely following Jesus, and strength to support them. Pray for the Holy Spirit to show you when a person’s faith is false or insincere and ask for power to help them change and turn their heart back to God. Pray for Shoreline’s L-team to have wisdom and strength as they guide our congregation.“Live It!” Challenge
Grace and Truth: Identify a situation where you are seeking to extend grace, but also stand on God’s truth. Be specific about one way you can be gracious and one way you can express the truth in this situation. Seek to discover how these two important commitments go hand-in-hand and are both essential for a healthy Christian life.Small Group Discussion
Tell about a time someone sent you a letter, e-mail or some form of communication that really encouraged you and made you feel great. What did they say and why did it bless you so much?
Tell about a time someone sent you an e-mail, letter, or communication that was a warning or challenge. How did you receive it and how did their communication impact your life?
Read: 2 John 4-6. What does it mean to walk (or live in the truth)? What helps a person to walk in the truth?
What is the connection between loving other people and following God’s commandments? Why are these so closely linked together?
What are specific and practical ways you can extend love to the people around you? How can your group members encourage you and support you as you seek to walk and live in love toward these people in your life?
Read: 2 John 7. If a person denies that Jesus came in the flesh (as a real man walking in this world), John says they are a deceiver and an antichrist. Why does John come down so hard on those who deny the bodily incarnation of Jesus? What implications might we face if we believed that Jesus did not come in human form as a man?
Read: 2 John 8-11. What does it mean to continue in the teaching of Christ? What can we do to make sure we are continuing and growing in the teaching of Jesus?
Why do you think John warns people not to invite someone into their home or extend them hospitality if they do not hold to the teaching of Christ? What dangers might we face if we invite someone into our home who claims to be a Christian leader but who is actually working in opposition to Jesus?
John goes so far as to say that we would be sharing in another person’s wicked work if we invited them into our home. Why is this warning still needed today?
