Sermon Series: Level Up! Sermon Title: Raising Your Passion for People
Delivered On: November 1, 2014
"When he (Jesus) saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." (Matthew 9:36 )
Ask God to help you see people the way He does, with compassion and grace. Pray for a heart that loves people no matter where they come from or their status in the eyes of the world.
Slow Down and Notice: Pick a very public place that you find yourself on a regular basis. It can be at school, work, a mall, a club…anywhere there is a regular flow of people. Find a place you can sit or stand without really standing out. Take ten to fifteen minutes to simply watch people pass by. Pray silently for these people. Ask God to help you see them as He does. Pray for each person to know the love and friendship of Jesus, if they have never met Him before.
Growth Group Discussion
What opportunities did you see to reach out to others since your last meeting? If you didn’t see any opportunities, or missed them, what can you do to make sure you are paying attention and more tuned in as you begin a new week?
Read: Matthew 22:34-40 Why do you think Jesus says, “All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments?” What is the heartbeat of what Jesus is getting at? What does this say about the importance of love for other people?
Imagine a person who tells you they really love a family member or friend who is lost and far from God. They believe Jesus could change this person’s life. But, they never take action to tell their family member or friend about Jesus. What might you say to this person to inspire or encourage them to begin reaching out in active ways?
Why must our outreach come from a place of love for people? What are the dangers of treating outreach as a project or duty that is not motivated by authentic love?
Has there been someone who has shown you the love of Christ in your own life? What are specific ways they showed you the presence, grace, or truth of Jesus? What do you think compelled them to reach out to you?
Read: Romans 5:6-8 How does understanding our own situation help us love people and have a passion for them? How might ignorance of our own situation keep us from reaching out?
What steps are you going to take in the next week to:
• Grow in praying for those that need Jesus in your life?
• Study the life of Jesus to see how he loved people?
• Fostering relationships with people around you who are far from God?
