Memorize and Reflect

“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them…” (Exodus 20:4-5)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to show you any idols you might hold in your heart or life. Then, confess the sin of idolatry and ask for the Holy Spirit’s power to repent and turn from these. Pray for discipline to seek God with your whole heart and become more devoted to Him than ever before.

“Live It!” Challenge

Idol Hunt: Keep your eyes open this week. Seek to identify some of the primary idols that exist in our culture. What is it that seems to draw our attention from God to itself as the primary focal point of our life and heart? Ask God to show you if there are roots of this kind of idolatry in your heart.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What are some of the physical things that can take an idolatrous place in our life? Why can these be dangerous to our faith and relationship with Jesus?

  2. What are some of the desires, dreams, or attitudes that can become idolatrous in our life? Why are these so dangerous to our spiritual health?

  3. Why do you think that God strictly forbids His people from having any idols? Why is it so important that we identify modern-day idols in our culture and in our own hearts?

  4. Read: Exodus 20:4-6. What are some of the things or attitudes that can become idols in your life (take more of an important place than they deserve and get in the way of your relationship with God)? What specific impact can they have on your life, outlook, attitudes, or walk with Jesus?

  5. What does the Bible mean when it says, “God is jealous”?

  6. What does this not mean? How is God’s jealousy an act of love and care for His children?

  7. Read: Ezekiel 18:19-20. How does this passage help clarify what God is saying in Exodus 20:4-6?

  8. How can the sins and bad behavior of one generation be passed down and effect the generations to follow? How have you seen this become a sad reality?

  9. What can we do to end generational sin and not pass it on to those who follow us? Use specific examples.

  10. How can our faith and passion for Jesus be passed from your generation to the next? Tell about a specific person in your family or life that you are seeking to influence as they grow in faith. What can you do to more intentionally and practically help them follow Jesus more closely?
