Reflecting on the Most Recent Sermon
Sermon Series: Worship, Honor, Trust! Sermon Title: Only God, Fully God, Seeking God
Delivered On: June 2, 2019
And God spoke all these words: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:1-3)
Thank God for loving you enough to give life-saving boundaries and life-giving direction to you as His child. Ask the Holy Spirit to show you where your heart is being devoted in an unhealthy way to anything that dishonors God. Pray for your love for God to grow stronger than it has ever been!
Learn the Big Ten: Take time to memorize the Ten Commandments (not every word, but all ten of the Commandments in order as they are listed in Exodus 20).
Small Group Discussion
When you think of the Ten Commandments, how can this list of things we should not do (and should do) seem to limit our freedom and confine us? Why do some people find these commandments hard to follow?
If everyone in the world followed these Ten Commandments every day of their life, how would this impact families, communities, and our world? Give specific examples of how the world would change if everyone followed these commandments.
If following these commands would make the world such a better place, why do so many people not follow them with greater commitment and passion?
Read: Matthew 22:37-40. How do these two commandments, given by Jesus, summarize and include all ten of the Commandments (and all other commands God gives)?
Read: Genesis 20:1-3. Why do you think God begins the Ten Commandments by reminding the people who he was and what He had done in the past? Why is it important for us to remember these two things as we seek to walk closely with Jesus and live for Him?
Tell about a great thing God has done for you in your past. How did He show up or what is one amazing thing God has done for you? How can remembering this inspire you to walk more closely and faithfully with Jesus?
We are not saved by following the Ten Commandments or by anything we do… no matter how good it might be. We are saved by the grace of God through placing our faith in Jesus. Why is it essential that we always remember that our good works do not save us?
What are some of the things in our world and lives that can take on a “god-like” role if we are not careful? How can we avoid and get rid of these?
What is one way you can take a practical step to put God first in your life above all things?
