Memorize and Reflect

"If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.” (1 Corinthians 12:26)

Prayer Direction

Pray for humility to let others lift your mat and take your hand during your times of need. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you let others become a conduit of His power and grace in your life. Pray for courage and strength to take the hand of those God wants you to help and for the commitment to lift the mat of those who are hurting.

“Live It!” Challenge

Take a Hand: Identify one person God has placed in your life who needs some help and encouragement in their journey of faith. Find one way in the coming week to help them forward. Encourage, teach, exhort, or challenge this person in their walk with Jesus. If they are responsive, look for another way to help them in the following week. If God leads you to do so, make this a normal part of your relationship with this younger believer.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about some of the different expressions of Christian community that you experience in the flow of a normal month. How do you meet and encounter God in these various relational connections?

  2. Watch: Session 2— "Encountering God in the Community of His People" on the Empowered DVD.
Tell about a godly Christian person the Lord has placed in your life to help strengthen you and give guidance as you grow on your journey with Jesus.

  3. Read: Matthew 26:36-39, Luke 8:51-56 and Matthew 17:1-6
At critical times of his life and ministry, Jesus gathered three close friends around him. What do you learn from this rhythm in the life of Jesus and how can we follow his example of building community and letting others come close to us?

  4. In the DVD story you meet four people who are both a family by blood and by faith in Jesus. Marian Piña is Roy’s mother. Roy Piña is Robin’s father. Robin Smitherman is Crystal’s mother. Four generations seeking to walk in community together. Robin, talks about longing to take what she has learned from her parents and grandmother and pass it on to the next generation. Why is it critical and essential that we all seek to pass on faith in Jesus to the next generation? What are practical ways we can do this?

  5. Read: 1 Timothy 1:1-2
Who is one person that has acted as a spiritual parent in your life and how has God used them to help you experience his presence and to empower you?

  6. Share a lesson of empowerment through community that you have learned through your reading of section two of the book or the Bible passages provided for your reading. Tell about one of the relationships that impacted you (The paralytic and his friends, Paul and Timothy, Ruth and Naomi, Lois…Eunice…and Timothy, the woman at the well, Jesus and his friends). How has their journey influenced and inspired you to grow in community?

  7. What are ways your small group members can extend deeper community to each other so that each of you can see God more clearly and feel his care more personally?
