Memorize and Reflect

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you see any areas of pride in your relationship with Him and others. Confess any pride in your life that has been detrimental in your relationship with God and others. Pray for the faith to trust God in your life even when you’re uncertain and afraid. Pray for the strength to be humble in your relationships with others. Ask God to give you the strength to deny yourself each day to serve Him and others.

“Live It!” Challenge

One Relational Choice: Identify one way that you have let pride affect your relationship with God or others. Commit to taking one action this week that will help you exercise humility in your relationship with God or people.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Describe a time in your life where you experienced (or witnessed) pride ruin a relationship? How did pride play a role in damaging the relationship?

  2. Read: Proverbs 16:18. What is it about pride that leads to ruin and destruction? How would you describe pride to someone else?

  3. Read: Proverbs 3:34. In a culture that celebrates individuals who are incredibly prideful, is it surprising that God opposes the proud? Why do you think God is against prideful people?

  4. What are some examples of what it looks like to be prideful in our relationship with God?

  5. Read: Proverbs 22:4. What does humility in our relationship with God look like? What does it mean that the wages of the humble “are riches, and honor, and life“?

  6. What is one step that you can take this week towards humility in your relationship with God? Confession of pride? Trusting Him in a difficult situation? More time in the word studying the character of Jesus?

  7. Read: Proverbs 13:10. Would you agree that where there is relational strife there is often pride? Why or why not?

  8. What role does pride have in our relationships with each other? How does pride manifest itself in relationships with one another?

  9. What is the wise next step that you should take to better follow God’s guideposts for humility in our relationships with each other? (i.e. apologize, be open to advice, learning to be interested in others, etc.)

  10. How can this group pray for you and encourage you to take steps forward in humility in your relationship with God and others?
