Memorize and Reflect

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. (Psalm 23:1)

Prayer Direction

Make a list of at least ten things that you don’t normally think to thank God for. Then, lift up thanks with joy in your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to grow your contentment until you realize that having more will never be the pathway to lasting happiness. Pray for God to grow an attitude deep in your soul that says, “Enough!” over and over as the world entices you to always seek for more.

“Live It!” Challenge

Post It - Take ten Post-It notes and write just one word, in bold letters, “ENOUGH!” Post these on ten things you have that you should be thankful for and content with (it could be a TV, computer, video game, car, where you live, your clothes - post it on your closet door, or anything else you think of). Each time you see these notes, tell God that you are so glad for His goodness and that you will seek to be content with what you have.

Small Group Discussion

  1. Tell about one material thing you have that you really enjoy and are truly thankful for. Share why this thing means so much to you and how God provided it.

  2. Read: Psalm 23 What does it mean to declare, “I lack nothing”? How does your lifestyle affirm this declaration? Or, how does your lifestyle send a different message?

  3. Describe one way that “your cup overflows” because of God’s goodness and provision in your life.

  4. Read: Philippians 4:10-13 What kind of lifestyle is Paul describing in this passage? Why is it hard for people (even Christians) to live with this attitude today?

  5. How have you experienced the truth that “I can do all things through him who gives me strength”? Where do you need His strength today and how can your group members pray for you to walk in God’s power in a fresh new way?

  6. What is the danger of spending too much time looking at what is in other people’s boxes? What is the danger of focusing too much time looking at what is in your box? How can keeping our eyes on Jesus grow our contentment?

  7. Read: 1 Timothy 6:9-10 How can a life focused primarily on acquiring more things and more money hurt our spiritual life and maturity? What can we do to guard against this?

  8. Read: 2 Corinthians 9:10-11 How can a life of generosity bring thanksgiving and glory to God? What helps you grow in desiring to be generous?
