Memorize and Reflect

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:2-3)

Prayer Direction

Ask God to give you a clear sense of His presence and power in the times when things in life seem to be spinning out of control. Thank God for creating order out of chaos and pray for Him to use you to do the same as you walk with Jesus. Invite God to teach you how to keep Him first in your life above all else.

“Live It!” Challenge

My Getting a Grip List:Take time in the coming days and reflect on your life. What are the areas where you really need to get a grip, in partnership with the Holy Spirit of God?

Small Group Discussion

  1. Describe a time you felt out of control.

  2. Read: Genesis 1:1-27
How do you see God creating order out of chaos and what does this teach you about the character of God?

  3. In Genesis 1:26, we learn that God created people in His image. How do we look more like Jesus and reflect His glory in the world when we partner with the Holy Spirit in creating order in our lives and the world around us? What are some of the things that get in the way of us moving toward order and getting a grip on our lives?

  4. Make a personal pie chart of what your life is like right now. Be totally honest. Then, make another pie chart reflecting how you would like your life to look. Be sure to include areas such as: Vocation, fitness, family, friendships, spiritual growth, hobbies and playtime, and other areas that matter to you. Share with your group members how you would like to see your life change and how they can be praying for you as you seek to get a grip in these areas of your life.

  5. What is one area of your life you feel you have a good grip on and you have a sense God is pleased with how you are living? What is one area that really needs to change and how can you take specific action to get a grip on this area of your life…in partnership with the Holy Spirit?

  6. Read: Matthew 22:37-40
According to the teaching of Jesus, what is the most important thing in all of life? What is the second most important thing we do according to Jesus? Why do you think Jesus ranks these as the number one and number two priorities for His followers?

  7. In the message, we talked about how the word GRIP can be used to remind us of the four key areas we should focus if we are going to move toward order in our lives and really get a grip on the things that matter most. What does each letter of GRIP stand for and why is each important?

  8. As you look at the list of life-areas that follow, which of these do you have the best grip on and what is helping you remain healthy and strong in this area? (Friendships, family relationships, work, finances, recreation & play, your schedule, health, or spiritual life)

  9. As you look at that same list of life-areas, which one is most out of control and what can you do to begin partnering with God to get a grip on this area of your life?
