Memorize and Reflect

For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. (Hebrews 10:14)

Prayer Direction

Praise God for the incarnation of Jesus, His sinless life, and His substitutionary atonement on the cross…He took your place and bore your sin…give Him glory and thanks. Ask God to help you see how He has given you His holiness…imputed it to you! Pray for a life that reflects the holiness that resides inside of you!

“Live It!” Challenge

Salmon Examination – Take a look at your life, considering how you are like a Salmon in the current of culture, and identify one way you are swimming upstream and fighting the current. Thank God for your commitment to resist the flow of unholiness and ask for power to swim harder. Also, identify one area you are simply letting the current take you down stream. Reflect on the consequences if you keep floating with the flow of culture and ask God to help you begin swimming against the flow of the sin you are letting impact your life.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What are some of the signs and indicators of unholiness you are seeing growing and increasing in our culture? How is our world becoming more accepting and even inviting of things that use to be considered sin?

  2. Read: Hebrews 10:10-14
What is God’s part in our holiness and how is Jesus the source of our holiness? Why are human efforts, no matter how great or sincere, never enough to make us truly holy?

  3. If Jesus has earned our holiness and if His cross is enough to make us completely and utterly pure, why should we bother seeking to grow in personal holiness? What would you say to a person who declares, “I never have to seek any kind of holiness because I am already made holy in Jesus?”

  4. Read: 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8
What does the language and teaching in this passage indicate about our part in sanctification, self-control, and growing in holiness? What do you think God is seeking to teach us through the strong words of verse eight in this passage?

  5. Read: Colossians 3:5-14
What does it mean to “put to death” our earthly nature? How do we do this…what are practical ways?

  6. How do we “rid ourselves” of sinful ways and “put on” new clothing of compassion, kindness…? How does love work as the unifying reality over all of our efforts to grow in holiness?

  7. Respond to this declaration, “You can’t have the fruit of you don’t have the root!” (In other words, there is no way you will ever have a lifestyle of holiness and purity of you don’t have the imputed holiness of Jesus.

  8. Respond to this statement, “When you have the root, you should have the fruit!” In other words, if you have come to the cross and been forgiven and made holy by Jesus, you will see other signs of holiness growing naturally in your life like fruit on a tree.

  9. What is one area of sin you are swimming upstream against? How are you winning this struggle and where do you need encouragement and help as you seek to grow in holiness?
