Memorize and Reflect

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24 )

Prayer Direction

Ask God to help you know the words of Jesus with greater clarity and to receive them with deeper conviction. Confess where you have reinterpreted, rationalized, or rebelled against what God teaches. Ask for power to follow the teaching of Jesus with humble obedience.

“Live It!” Challenge

Challenge- Remember and Respond Think back over the past year. Make a list (mental or written) of the many ways God has shown you his love and how He has been faithful to you. Reflect on these and ask God to help you realize that following Him in obedience is the right way to live, even when His will might not make perfect sense to you.

Small Group Discussion

  1. What is one lesson from the Sermon on the Mount that has really challenged, convicted, or encouraged you (think back over the “Take it Up a Notch” series and the “Blessed Life” series).

  2. What are some of the teachings of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount that are very counter-cultural? Why are these lessons hard for people today to embrace and follow?

  3. Read: Matthew 7:24-25
Tell about a person you know (feel free to use their name) who really knows and follows the words of Jesus. How do you see this person as an example of wisdom? How has God been their foundation and given them strength, even in the hard times of life?

  4. If Jesus were to sit with this person and speak truth to them, what do you think He would say?

  5. Read: Matthew 7:26-27
Tell about a person you know (please don’t use their name or indicate who they are) who has heard the words of Jesus, but they don’t follow them. How does their life reflect foolish choices and behaviors? How have you seen storms hit their life and watched as things have crashed around them?

  6. If Jesus were to sit with this person and speak truth to them, what do you think He would say?

  7. What are some examples of ways people read the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and Reinterpret, Rationalize, or rebel?

  8. How are you tempted to do one of these three things and how can your group members pray for you as you seek to follow God in humble obedience and build your life on the solid foundation of Jesus’ teaching?
